Douglas County landscaper surprises 23-year Army vet with free landscaping makeover
A Douglas County Landscaper has surprised a Colorado War Veteran and his family with free landscaping for their home. Jason Sakry, Co-Founder of Landscaping for VETS based in Larkspur, was joined by his wife Jeannine, as well as the local news media, when he arrived carrying a huge gift certificate at the home of James Vines of Commerce City. Vines’ wife, Stephany, nominated her husband during an online contest two months ago which was advertised on HGTV. Landscaping for VETS had put out the call for nominations statewide and narrowed down more than 50 nominations to six finalists. All nominees were required to have served on active military duty and live in the State of Colorado.
The winner from those six finalists was Vines, a U.S. Army Veteran who did four tours in Iraq and served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army for 23 years. He retired in 2011. Vines and his family will now have the opportunity to receive their dream backyard. “This isn’t about planting a few trees, shrubs or adding some grass or rock,” says Sakry, “if they want a new deck, a built-in barbecue, a fire pit, they’re going to get whatever fits their wants and needs with the space they have.”
This is the first year of the contest which was designed to give back to veterans who have sacrificed so much for this country’s freedom. “Our hope is to create a beautiful outdoor environment for our winning vet and bless them with the yard of their dreams so they can enjoy it for years to come with their family and friends,” says Sakry.
